01First confirm which chain USDT is on
The wallet home page may display assets from multiple networks together. First open the details of this USDT, confirm the network, and then check the fee conditions for the same network and the same sending account. The balance in another account or on another chain cannot be directly regarded as the fee available for this transfer.
Tether's official supported protocols page lists the Ethereum and TRON versions separately. The coin name is the same, but the transfer environment is different; you can first complete the check using the USDT network selection guide.
02Ethereum: Look at the USDT quantity and ETH Gas separately
The "What is gas?" section of the Ethereum official Gas documentation explains that the fee for the network to execute a transaction is paid in ETH. For ordinary accounts that bear their own fees, even if USDT is sufficient, insufficient ETH may still block sending. The total asset value shown by the wallet cannot replace the ETH available for this transfer.
For example, you want to send part of your USDT to an exchange order, but see that the fee is insufficient; first check the fee prompt, and do not repeatedly increase the USDT sending amount. Fees are affected by the network and execution operations at the time, and the current estimate should be read.

03TRON: Bandwidth and energy must also be verified separately
In the Resource Model for TRON, the "Bandwidth and Energy" section distinguishes the bandwidth used for transaction data from the energy used for contract execution. Sending TRC20 tokens involves contract calls; having bandwidth alone does not mean the required energy is also satisfied. If resources are insufficient, the network may consume TRX from the sending account.
Therefore, some accounts have TRX deducted when transferring, while some accounts have part of the cost covered by existing resources. Do not infer your own fixed fee from someone else's single transfer result; check this account's resources and the wallet confirmation page.
04When you see a payment-on-behalf prompt, verify who bears the cost
Some processes may have other participants provide resources or bear part of the cost. The "Charging order" and "Deployer Energy sharing" sections of TRON explain this type of resource-sharing mechanism, but this cannot be used to conclude that any wallet or any token can be sent for free.
In practice, check which fee is covered, whether there are other deductions, and the balance required on the confirmation page. The interface using USDT to display prices does not by itself prove that the underlying network pays fees directly with USDT.

05First confirm you can pay, then create the exchange order
When preparing to use USDT to TRX or USDT to ETH, you must also first send USDT to the order address. The goal of exchanging back to the fee asset does not exempt you from the sending conditions of the deposit step.
First check the wallet fee, then create the order and pay as required. If you have already attempted to send, first check the original transaction status; do not resend just because the balance page has not changed. For the difference between a quote and sender-side deductions, see Exchange fees and minimum amount.

06Self-custody wallets and platform withdrawals are checked in different places
First determine who is sending the on-chain transaction. A self-custody wallet usually has you sign from that account and confirm the network fee; a platform withdrawal is sent by the platform according to its process, and you should check the network, withdrawal fee, and estimated arrival shown by the platform. You cannot apply an ordinary wallet's balance requirements unchanged to all platform withdrawal pages.
This table can scroll horizontally.
| Sending entry point | What to check | Common misjudgment |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Ethereum wallet | Mainnet ETH of the same account and current Gas estimate | Having ETH on another chain is enough to pay mainnet fees |
| TRON wallet | This account's bandwidth, energy, and available TRX | Having only USDT or bandwidth guarantees you can send |
| Exchange withdrawal | Withdrawal network, actual received amount, and fee deduction method | The filled amount equals the amount the order will definitely receive |
| The wallet provides fee payment on your behalf | Service coverage, deducted asset, and confirmation notice | Writing "pay on behalf" means all steps are free |

07A common scenario: You want to exchange USDT for ETH, but lack the Gas needed to send
Assume an ordinary self-custody account holds Ethereum USDT but does not have enough ETH to pay for this send. Even if the goal is to exchange USDT for ETH, USDT must first be deposited to the order; ETH received in the future cannot retroactively pay for the deposit transaction that already needs to be completed.
First check the available fee payment methods in the wallet and meet the sending conditions, then query USDT to ETH. On TRON, exchanging USDT for TRX also requires completing the same sending condition check first. Do not create a time-limited order first and then assume the exchange will cover the initial fee for you.
If the send has already been submitted, first check whether a transaction hash was generated. Not broadcast, waiting for on-chain confirmation, and exchange not completed are different situations; handle them according to the not received troubleshooting steps to avoid duplicate payment.

FAQ
If I keep more USDT, will I definitely be able to pay the fee?
Not necessarily. It also depends on the network it is on and the wallet's actual fee mechanism; the USDT balance cannot automatically replace ETH, TRX, or the required resources.
If TRON has available bandwidth, do I not need to check energy?
Still needs checking. Bandwidth and energy cover different uses, and a TRC20 contract transfer involves energy consumption.
If there is no network fee, can I first exchange USDT for the fee coin in FeilongEX?
You cannot assume it is possible. The exchange still requires completing the deposit transfer first, so you should confirm that the existing account has the conditions to send.
When the platform withdraws USDT, must I also separately prepare ETH?
It cannot be generalized. The platform sends according to its own withdrawal rules, and you should verify its fee coin, deduction method, and actual received amount. An ordinary self-custody account requires the ETH explanation, which does not mean every platform requires you to separately hold ETH.
