01The same USDT does not mean the same transfer network
Tether issues USDT on multiple blockchains. In this article, TRC20 refers to USDT on TRON, and ERC20 refers to USDT on the Ethereum mainnet. They use different networks and token contracts; the same name and icon do not prove that a transfer can arrive cross-chain.
A token contract address is used to identify an asset, not as a personal receiving address. When verifying whether an asset is genuine, you can refer to Tether's official protocol list; when filling in receiving information, you should copy the deposit address for that network from your own wallet or the receiving platform. Other networks compatible with Ethereum cannot be treated as the Ethereum mainnet merely because the address starts with 0x.

02First ask which network the recipient accepts
Open the USDT deposit page of the receiving wallet or platform, and record the explicitly supported networks, whether deposits are open, the minimum deposit requirement, and whether an additional tag is shown. When paying or depositing to someone else, have the recipient provide the network name; do not choose it for them based only on a string of addresses.
If the recipient only accepts Ethereum, set the receiving network to Ethereum; if it only accepts TRON, set it to TRON. If both are accepted, then compare the existing asset network and the current total cost. If the receiving network has not yet been confirmed, complete the verification before creating the exchange.

03The sending network depends on the asset you currently hold
Check the network in the wallet's USDT details, not just the combined balance on the home page. If you hold TRON USDT, initiate the corresponding transfer from TRON; if you hold Ethereum USDT, check the sending conditions for Ethereum. Switching the wallet network display will not move existing assets.
When withdrawing from a platform, also check the withdrawal network actually selected and the amount expected to arrive at the order address. If the wallet must bear the fee itself, check ETH, TRX, or available resources; for platform withdrawals, check according to the deduction method shown on its confirmation page.

04Four situations, four corresponding choices
Match the purpose first, then decide whether an exchange is needed. The scenarios below only explain the selection method and do not promise that a route will remain available or that fees are fixed.
This table can scroll horizontally.
| Existing asset | Receiving requirement | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| TRON USDT | Only accepts Ethereum USDT | Query the TRC20 → ERC20 route |
| Ethereum USDT | Only accepts TRON USDT | Query the ERC20 → TRC20 route |
| TRON USDT | Accepts TRON USDT | First assess whether a direct transfer on the same network already meets the need |
| USDT on any network | Only the address was provided, without specifying the network | Confirm the network first; do not send directly |

05After the networks match, compare the current cost
To compare fees, use the same sending amount and the same target asset, and record the estimated received amount and sender-side deduction separately. TRON resources, Ethereum Gas, platform withdrawal charges, and exchange quotes may change, and you cannot assert from the network name that one option is always cheaper or faster.
When you need to change chains, separately check the specific address uses and steps for TRC20 to ERC20 or ERC20 to TRC20. For the comparison method, see Fees and minimum amount guide.
Have you confirmed receipt of Ethereum USDT? Continue by verifying the address and crediting conditions. If you are comparing methods for changing chains, first distinguish the goals and actual mechanisms of cross-chain swaps and bridges.

06Only after transferring out do you discover the network is inconsistent
First save the transaction hash of the network actually used, the order number, amount, and target address, and confirm where the funds went. Do not resend in order to "correct the network," and do not think that changing the wallet display can withdraw a transaction that has already been broadcast.
Check whether handling is possible based on who controls the receiving address and the network situation; the result cannot be guaranteed in advance. Organize the materials according to the Wrong network troubleshooting guide.

FAQ
Can USDT on TRC20 and ERC20 be directly transferred to each other?
A direct transfer can only be executed on the network used and will not automatically exchange assets from another chain. If the two ends have different requirements, use a service that explicitly supports that direction and verify the deposit and receiving networks separately by order.
Is TRC20 necessarily cheaper than ERC20?
It cannot be determined as fixed. You should look at the current exchange quote, the sending wallet's network cost or platform withdrawal fee, and whether the recipient supports that network.
If the receiving address starts with 0x, can I choose ERC20?
It cannot be decided by format alone. Multiple networks may use the same address format; in this article, ERC20 refers to the Ethereum mainnet, and the recipient must still explicitly support USDT on that network.
Must the same network also go through an exchange?
Not necessarily. If the existing asset and receiving requirements already match, first confirm whether an ordinary same-network transfer meets the need; there is no need to create an exchange just to switch the wallet display.
